Our Beloved Herd

We are blessed with a string of wonderful horses, and like the rest of us, each with his/her own personality.

Horses Belonging to Cadence

MAGIC, at approximately 26 years of age, is the granddaddy of them all. He has been with Cadence for 12 years and, we think he was a roper before his “retirement.” Despite his arthritis, he troopers on with his special inner peace and patience with everyone. This has made Magic a particular favorite with some of our clients, especially Richard, who is confined to a wheelchair. Magic and Richard have been a team for years.

DOLLY is an exquisite 16 year old decorated with the bar N brand of the Navajo Nation. Cadence purchased this beautiful Palomino from Penni Stahl. Perfectly “short,” she is just the right size for mounting by a “height-challenged” rider. She’s strong and sweet, and a real workhorse. Easy to catch, anyone can ride her. She also appreciates being with an experienced rider with gentle reining techniques. Dolly is the only horse we have had to purchase but she is a wonderful investment for the program.

ROSIE came from Sarah Barbara & Marlou Mowrer of Pagosa Springs. She is a 19 year old quarter horse with Parelli training. Despite some arthritis, she is a great side-passer, a little stubborn on rare occasions and yet, retains a gentle spirit. We monitor her diet as she tends to overeat.

STAR, a 10 year-old gaited Peruvian Paso (perhaps a Mountain horse mix), came from Telluride nearly 200 pounds underweight. A year later, after a special diet and our own TLC, she has filled out beautifully. She has a beautifully flowing forelock, mane and tail are beautifully streaked with light tinges of “pink.” Typically, for the breed, she is small boned so we have a special saddle just for her. Still rather panicky at times, Star is part of our rigorous but gentle training program and we expect her to be another family favorite.

Ron & Katie's Horses

APACHEbelongs to Harold Jackson, under contract to Ron & Katie. Not registered, he’s a pinto. At 10 years of age, Apache is the largest, alpha horse of the entire herd. He’s a natural leader without fighting over it. The other horses recognize him as a leader and take him at face value. He ran wild in Utah for several months with the Navajo horses, and had an attitude for bucking people off. In the course of working with Apache, we knew he was just looking for someone to trust. Ron Tyner and Ken Crowe, the only riders he takes at this time, have been training this beautiful horse. Watch this horse in motion and, despite his size, Apache seems lighter than air with the moves of a dancer. He just has the power and moves to keep all eyes on him.

SNOWMAN is a tall, handsome 25 year old quarter horse, donated by Jude & Kelly Behn. Trained as a reiner, he moves well despite some age-related arthritis that limits his time for loping. He’s been a little squeamish about his ears but with focused training, he is overcoming his concerns. Quiet by nature, he is “second in command” in the herd.

BUTCHY from Reserve, NM, is a mustang with a natural fear of being eaten. Though anybody can ride him, his mustang instincts make him the last to be caught, yet he likes being in charge. This is a great combination for showing riders they must be in charge of their lives. At age 25, he’s the smallest of the herd, with the exception of Star. With scars from old battles, you can always count on Butchy.

STEVIE, a 4 year old with remarkable social skills and a sense of humor, was born two days after Ron & Katie were married (that’s how they can remember how long they’ve been married). They started imprinting him 15 seconds after he was born so he loves people. Stevie’s mom and dad were both quarter horses, but mom never got registered, so he’s classified as a grade horse. The most “people friendly” horse on the place, Stevie is an inquisitive, playful teenager who gets into everything. He’s also a pick-pocket with amazing deftness (read his lips!). He loves to run, jump and kick up his heels while, as a natural ambassador, he easily makes friends with all the other horses, especially the new ones. He’ll entertain with his tricks, too. Stevie has a unique people orientation. Walk into the corral and you quickly understand why he is the official greeter.

BABE is a 25 year old quarter horse in extremely good shape who spent many years alone in a pasture. After repeated attempts by Katie to purchase this sweet horse, the deal was finally made. In her younger days, Babe won money as a roping horse. (We think she could still win a few of those contests today.) Babe’s an easy catch and a great lesson horse. As an omega horse, she’s not a fighter which makes her a wonderful addition to the herd.

JAN (a.k.a. Come to Papa, b. 1995, APHA), was a barrel horse bred for speed, and won money. Katie’s horse, she’s big boned and fast, and a good mother to Bob. She’s also the granddaughter of Indian Image the great racing champion. Katie bought her from Belinda Horniyak in Austin, TX.

FANCY (a.k.a. Doc’s Smokin’ Fancy, b.1998, APHA) was brought here from Nebraska by Yogi Bartholomew. With bloodlines from Smokin’ Jose and Doc Bar, she’s a world class cutter, extremely athletic and kind of stubborn at times. Sensitive, and a great cutter and cow horse, Fancy needs an experienced rider on board. She is also the mother of Jewel.

BOB (a.k.a. A Tru Flying Bob, b. May 2009, APHA, Tobiano), this colt is very playful. His dad, A Tru Sonny Dee, is a world champion paint horse. Bob, a gelding, has had speed from the day he could walk. The son of Jan, he loves to pester Jewel in a playful way, as he chases and races her in every turn-out session. Named by Katie after Ron’s dad (Bob Tyner).

JEWEL (a.k.a. A Tru Smokin Jewel APHA, Tobiano w/one dot on her back), survived a near-fatal birth. Doctored for 3 days and 3 nights, she came through with a smile. Sweet, a real gem, really smart, quick to learn, fast with her ground work, she was named after Jewel the singer (wife of the great Ty Murray). Her dad, A Tru Sonny Dee, is a world champion paint horse. Jewel is delightfully feisty as she challenges her mom for the food. She has a cute little marking on the right side of her face. There is a little white trail of white hair leading from the bottom of her right eye that looks like a tear stain. Maybe it is symbolic of her survival as a thriving young filly.
